Tips for Getting Your Request on the Air
Knowing how to reach the studio is only half the story. A little timing and some insight into how rock radio works can greatly improve the odds of hearing your song come through the speakers.
Time your request well
Requests work best during live shifts, when a DJ is in the studio and can react to what listeners are asking for. Check the on-air schedule to see who is hosting and when. Requests sent overnight or during pre-recorded segments may not be seen until much later, if at all. If you want a song for a specific moment, such as a birthday, a road trip or the drive home, get in touch well before that time rather than at the last minute.
Make it easy for the DJ
- Give the artist and the song title. "That one with the big guitar riff" is hard to find in a hurry.
- Add a short reason. A dedication or a quick story can make a request more memorable, and some DJs enjoy reading them on air.
- Include your first name and where you're listening from. Shout-outs to Tulsa neighbourhoods and nearby towns are part of the fun of local radio.
Understand why some songs don't play
Every station works within a format and a music library, so not every track can make it to air. Songs with explicit lyrics may need a clean edit, a deep cut may not be in the system, and a song that was just played might be held back for a while to keep the mix fresh. If your pick doesn't air, try again on another day or ask for a different track by the same band.
Fit your request to the show
Different programmes have their own flavour. A classic rock block suits a request for a seventies or eighties staple, while a modern rock hour is a better home for a newer release. Browsing our shows and getting to know the DJs will help you match the right song to the right moment. Be patient and polite, and keep listening. Regular callers often become familiar voices to the people behind the microphone.
